York County is under a boil water advisory following a major water main break in Fort Mill last night. The incident occurred near Highway 21 and Coltharp Road, prompting an immediate response from county work crews.
The break caused a significant loss of water pressure, and in order to make repairs, the line has been shut down. While crews worked overnight to isolate the leak, they are now actively digging to access and repair the damaged pipe. The exact cause of the break has not yet been determined, but officials expect repairs to be completed sometime today.
As a precaution, and to ensure public safety once water service is restored, residents in the affected area are advised to boil their water before consumption. This advisory applies to water used for drinking, cooking, brushing teeth, and washing hands.
To ensure water is safe, residents should bring water to a rolling boil and maintain the boil for at least one full minute before allowing it to cool.
In addition, it is recommended that residents temporarily stop using appliances that rely on drinkable water, such as dishwashers, icemakers, and coffee makers. Using disposable plates and utensils is also advised.
Officials have stated that an update will be provided once the advisory is lifted. Until then, residents should continue to follow the safety recommendations to prevent any potential health risks.
