FORT MILL, S.C. — The Humane Society of York County (HSYC) has named Gus Gus and Janice as this week’s featured adoptable pets, each with their own unique story and personality, hoping for a second chance at a forever home.
Cat of the Week: Gus Gus
Gus Gus, a 7.5-year-old tabby and white cat, has been waiting for a new home for nearly five months. Brought in as an owner surrender, he has now spent 149 days at the shelter.
Described as a “love bug” by staff, Gus Gus has shown that he enjoys companionship and affection. He has previously lived with other cats and is expected to transition well into a multi-cat household with proper introduction. He is neutered, vaccinated, tested, and microchipped—ready to be adopted.
Gus Gus is known for perching quietly to observe daily life and would make a calm, attentive companion. Those interested in meeting him can call HSYC at 803-802-0902 to schedule a visit.
Dog of the Week: Janice
Janice, a young terrier mix, has made great strides since arriving at HSYC as an underweight stray. Now healthy and full of energy, she weighs around 35–40 pounds and is estimated to be just under two years old.
Janice excels on a leash, enjoys car rides, and is known for her playful zoomies in the rescue yard. She interacts well with other dogs and has a special fondness for children. During a recent “doggy day out,” she spent time playing with kids—an experience described by staff as “her best day ever.”
She has also completed training classes at Zoom Room in Fort Mill, and her future adopters will receive two free follow-up sessions to continue her progress.
Janice is ready for adoption and can be met by appointment by calling 803-802-0902.
More from HSYC
Although HSYC’s recent kitten adoption event has ended, there are still many kittens available. The organization is asking the community to support its mission through donations, fostering, or simply sharing adoptable pets on social media.
Current needs include financial contributions, gently used items for the HSYC Thrift Shop, and new foster families for both cats and dogs.
Meanwhile, the shelter is awaiting final permitting approval from the City of Fort Mill to launch its 2025 Christmas Store fundraiser.
2025 Adoption Success
So far in 2025, HSYC has successfully placed 502 pets into permanent homes—115 dogs and 387 cats.
