McMaster Deploys SC National Guard to D.C.

Governor Henry McMaster has authorized the deployment of 200 members of the South Carolina National Guard to Washington, D.C. The guardsmen will be in the nation’s capital to assist federal law enforcement as part of an effort to restore order.

The deployment is in response to a request from the Pentagon’s National Guard Bureau and falls under a federal executive order. The cost of the operation will be covered by the federal government.

A key provision of the deployment order is a plan for immediate recall. The guardsmen can be called back to South Carolina without delay should a hurricane or other natural disaster threaten the state.

This move marks a cooperative effort between state and federal authorities to address ongoing security concerns in the District of Columbia.
