ROCK HILL, S.C. — The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday evening, July 5, at the intersection of Sturgis Road and Cheryl Lynn Drive in Rock Hill.
According to a press release from SLED, the incident began when deputies from the York County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of gunfire coming from a vehicle. Upon locating the vehicle, deputies saw an armed woman inside. They followed the vehicle and called for backup from the Rock Hill Police Department.
The vehicle came to a stop at the intersection, where an encounter occurred between the woman and officers. During the confrontation, a Rock Hill police officer discharged their firearm, striking the woman. She was taken into custody and transported to a hospital. No deputies or officers were injured in the incident.
SLED’s preliminary investigation revealed the woman was holding a BB gun that had been modified to resemble a real handgun. A photo of the weapon was included in the agency’s report.
The York County Sheriff’s Office is pursuing criminal charges. SLED noted that the investigation remains active, and no further details are being released at this time.
This is the first officer-involved shooting involving the Rock Hill Police Department in 2025. The department recorded one similar incident in 2024. Statewide, there were 45 officer-involved shootings in South Carolina last year.
SLED investigates all officer-involved shootings in the state when requested by the involved agency or jurisdiction. Their goal is to provide a thorough and independent review of such incidents, including gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and submitting findings to prosecutors.
