ROCK HILL — The Freedom Walkway Committee is now accepting nominations for its 2025 Local Heroes Recognition, an annual honor that highlights individuals or groups in Rock Hill and York County who have made notable contributions to justice and equality.
Nominations are open through June 28, 2025, and can be submitted via the committee’s website at www.freedomwalkway.com. The recognition ceremony is scheduled for November.
Eligible nominees must have lived in Rock Hill or York County and demonstrated significant leadership through advocacy or actions that furthered justice and equality. The committee seeks those who have challenged social norms and exhibited unselfish commitment, perseverance, and personal sacrifice — often at great personal risk — to advance the rights of others.
The Freedom Walkway, located off Main Street in Old Town Rock Hill, was inaugurated in November 2016. It honors local champions of justice, including civil rights advocates like the Friendship Nine. Featuring the inscription “Liberty and Justice for All,” the site serves as a tribute to those who have contributed to the community’s pursuit of equality.
Past honorees have included local leaders whose efforts have left lasting impacts on civil rights, education, and community reform in York County.
