New South Carolina Law Requires Seat Belts for Kids on Golf Carts

A new state law in South Carolina regulating golf cart usage is now in effect, requiring that all children under the age of 12 wear a seat belt while riding in a golf cart on public roads. The legislation, signed by Governor Henry McMaster, took effect on May 22, 2025, and applies statewide.

In addition to the seat belt mandate, the law reaffirms that golf cart drivers must be at least 16 years old, possess a valid driver’s license, and only operate on roads with speed limits of 35 miles per hour or less. State law also allows golf cart use only during daylight hours unless a municipality passes a local ordinance permitting nighttime operation.

Travis Macaluso, Owner of Macaluso Golf Carts said, “We’ve seen a big increase in calls from families asking about seat belt installations since the new law went into effect. Safety has always been a priority for us, and we’re glad to help residents get their golf carts up to code. Installing seat belts is a straightforward process, and we offer both in-shop service and kits for those who prefer to do it themselves. Whether it’s for kids or overall peace of mind, we encourage all golf cart owners to make this upgrade.”
