Law enforcement agencies are alerting South Carolina residents to a rising crime trend known as “jugging,” where individuals are targeted and robbed after withdrawing cash from banks or ATMs. This calculated crime often involves criminals observing victims at financial institutions and then following them to another location to commit the theft.
“Jugging” is a form of targeted robbery, often carried out by teams of perpetrators. These criminals typically surveil bank parking lots or ATM areas, looking for individuals who appear to be handling significant amounts of cash. Once a target is identified, they are followed to their next destination, which could be their home, workplace, or another business. The theft can then occur through direct robbery, or by breaking into the victim’s vehicle after they have left it.
Law enforcement officials emphasize that “jugging” is not a random crime of opportunity but often involves sophisticated surveillance tactics. Vehicles used by “juggers” may appear ordinary, making their behavior the primary indicator of suspicious activity. Authorities recommend being vigilant of vehicles that seem to be loitering near banks or ATMs, or those that appear to be following your vehicle after you leave a financial institution. If you suspect you are being followed, it’s advised to change your route and immediately call 911, driving to a police station or a busy, well-lit public area rather than directly home.
To reduce the risk of becoming a victim, police offer several tips:
- Be aware of your surroundings: Always remain alert and observant of people and vehicles around you when conducting banking transactions.
- Conceal your cash: Avoid openly displaying large sums of money. Place withdrawn cash securely in your wallet, purse, or a discreet bag before leaving the bank.
- Vary your routine: If you frequently withdraw cash, try to change the times and locations of your banking visits to avoid establishing predictable patterns.
- Consider alternatives: Utilize online banking, mobile payment apps, or drive-thru ATM services whenever possible to minimize the need for carrying large amounts of physical cash.
- Secure your vehicle: If you must leave cash in your car temporarily, place it in the trunk or a hidden compartment, and always ensure your vehicle is locked.
- Report suspicious activity: Immediately notify law enforcement if you observe anyone behaving suspiciously near financial institutions or if you believe you are being followed.
While the term “jugging” may be unfamiliar to some, it represents a serious threat. By understanding this crime and adopting precautionary measures, South Carolinians can significantly reduce their risk of becoming a victim.
