With the May 7 federal deadline just one month away, South Carolina residents who plan to fly domestically or visit military bases and federal buildings are being urged to secure their Real ID now to avoid travel disruptions.
The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005 to enhance national security, will officially go into effect nationwide on May 7, 2025. From that date forward, travelers will need a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or identification card—or an alternative form of federally accepted ID—to board a commercial flight or enter secure federal facilities.
In South Carolina, the Real ID is easily recognized by a gold star on the top right corner of the card. Despite being available since 2018, only 62% of the state’s licensed drivers and ID holders have upgraded to Real ID-compliant credentials. That leaves over one million South Carolinians who may still need to act.
Kevin Shwedo, executive director of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV), emphasized the urgency.
“We expect to be very busy in the coming month as those with summer travel plans try to get ready,” said Shwedo. “People will need to come with some patience as we take care of everyone we can around the deadline.”

A Real ID is not required to drive or vote—only for federal identification purposes.

Alternative forms of ID, such as a valid U.S. passport or active-duty military ID, will still be accepted.

The Real ID driver’s license costs $25 and is valid for up to eight years.

For residents 17 years and older, original and renewed ID cards are free.

For children aged 5 to 16, ID cards are $15.
To get a Real ID, applicants must bring specific documentation proving identity, Social Security number, and South Carolina residency. With summer travel fast approaching, those without a Real ID are encouraged to avoid last-minute stress and upgrade their credentials as soon as possible.
