Democratic nominee for governor says the decision honors the voters who anchor the party – and puts South Carolina at the center of American democracy
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Dr. Jermaine Johnson, Democratic nominee for Governor of South Carolina released a statement today thanking the DNC for selecting South Carolina as the first Democratic primary in 2028.
“South Carolina being named as the first Democratic presidential primary is good news for the Palmetto state and its citizens. We will proudly play a key role in deciding our next President. This is a great opportunity for South Carolina and its citizens who will chart a brighter path for our nation.” said Johnson.
“Thank you to the South Carolina Democratic Party leaders who worked so hard to make this happen. South Carolina has long led the South in selecting our Democratic nominee for President and we are poised and ready to now lead the nation in that effort.”

About Dr. Jermaine Johnson:
Raised by working-class parents and surrounded by poverty, gun violence, and homelessness, Dr. Jermaine Johnson used basketball as his way out, earning a full scholarship to the College of Charleston before playing professionally in the NBA’s D-League and overseas. After returning home, he earned a doctorate in Organizational Leadership and founded the New Economic Beginnings Foundation to help people gain the skills and support they need to succeed. In 2020, he shocked the political establishment by defeating a 22-year incumbent, and since then, he has served in the South Carolina House, standing up for working families in Richland and Kershaw Counties. Now running for governor, Jermaine continues his work as the owner of Dream Team Consulting, an adjunct professor at Midlands Technical College, and an active member of civic, fraternal, and faith-based organizations. He lives in Hopkins with his wife, Dr. Evan Patrice Johnson, and their four children.

Thomas Hyslip lives in Tega Cay with his wife and daughter. After 27 years in the U.S. Army and Federal Law Enforcement, he retired to pursue his passion for teaching. Tom is now an Assistant Professor of Instruction at the University of South Florida.
