York County, SC – Residents living within a 10-mile radius of the Catawba Nuclear Station are advised that Duke Energy and York County emergency management officials will conduct a routine test of the outdoor warning sirens on Wednesday, April 9th, between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
The test will involve activating the 89 sirens located around the nuclear station. Each siren will sound for a duration of five to 30 seconds, and some sirens may be tested multiple times to ensure proper functionality.
These regular tests are a crucial part of ongoing maintenance efforts to guarantee the reliability of the emergency warning system. The scheduled testing dates and times are strategically chosen to minimize disruption to the surrounding community.
Important Information for Residents:
- No Public Action Necessary: This is a scheduled test; residents are not required to take any action.
- Verification: If you are unsure whether the siren you hear is a test or an actual emergency, tune in to a local radio or television station. During an actual emergency, these stations will interrupt regular programming to provide vital information and instructions.
- Siren Limitations: Please be aware that the outdoor warning sirens may not be audible from inside homes or businesses.
- Hearing a siren does NOT mean you should evacuate. Local radio and television stations will provide information and instructions on what to do.
Duke Energy and York County emergency management officials emphasize that these tests are essential to maintaining the preparedness of the community in the event of an actual emergency. Residents are encouraged to remain informed and to rely on official sources for accurate information.
