Lancaster Area Ride Service Expands Offerings with Free and Discounted Fares

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. – The Lancaster Area Ride Service (LARS) is implementing significant changes to its transportation program, making travel more accessible and affordable for local residents. Starting March 17, seniors, veterans, and students will benefit from new fare discounts and expanded service options.

Under the updated program, Lancaster County seniors aged 60 and older can now use LARS transportation for free within the county and receive half-price fares for out-of-county trips. Eligible seniors must provide a driver’s license, state ID, or Medicare card as proof of age.

Veterans in Lancaster County will also receive free transportation for in-county trips and half-price fares for travel outside the county. To qualify, veterans must present a VIC card, VHIC card, or a state-issued ID with veteran designation.

Students residing in Lancaster County can now take advantage of discounted fares when traveling to school or work within the county. Proof of school ID is required to receive the discount.

Along with these fare changes, LARS is expanding its service to include transportation for medical appointments, work, education, retail, and grocery or pharmacy visits. The service’s availability has also been extended, operating Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

LARS fare rates have been adjusted as follows:

  • 1-10 miles: $1
  • 11-20 miles: $2
  • 21-45 miles: $3
  • 45+ miles: $10

All trips must be booked at least three business days in advance and are subject to availability. For more information on scheduling, eligibility, and policies, residents can visit LancasterCOA.org or call 803-285-6956.

These changes aim to improve mobility for residents while ensuring affordable and reliable transportation options for those who need them most.
