YORK COUNTY, SC – A 40-year-old female inmate at the York County Detention Center has died after being taken to the hospital for medical concerns.
Shortly after 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 26, 2025, YCDC staff discovered the inmate unresponsive. After checking her vitals, officers immediately initiated life-saving measures. EMS arrived, continued these measures, and transported the inmate to an area hospital. She continued to receive advanced medical care at the hospital until she passed away at 1:29 a.m.
In keeping with YCSO policy, Sheriff Tony Breeden has requested the State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) to investigate the death.
The inmate had been at YCDC since February 19, 2025, facing charges of possession of marijuana (first offense) and possession of fentanyl (second offense).
Details, including the inmate’s identity, will not be disclosed until the investigation is complete and the York County Coroner’s Office notifies the next of kin.
