Fort Mill Superintendent Dr. Chuck Epps Announces Retirement After 49-Year Career

Fort Mill, S.C. –Dr. Chuck Epps, Superintendent of the Fort Mill School District, announced his retirement at Tuesday’s night’s school board meeting, effective June 30, 2025, marking the culmination of an extraordinary 49-year career in education, with 45 of those years dedicated to the Fort Mill School District.

In a letter contained within the meeting minutes, Dr. Epps provided some thoughts and insight on his decision. “It is difficult to put into words the emotions I feel as I announce my retirement,” Epps said. “Serving this district has been the honor of my professional life.”

Dr. Epps has held numerous positions within the district, including teacher’s aide, coach, teacher, assistant principal, principal, administrator, and, for the past 15 years, superintendent. Under his leadership, the district has nearly doubled in size while maintaining its reputation as one of South Carolina’s top-performing school systems. Despite rapid growth, he has fostered a strong sense of community and a family-oriented culture among staff, students, and families.

“I have seen firsthand what can be accomplished when a community comes together with a shared vision for education,” Epps said. “The Fort Mill School District is built on a legacy of excellence, and its success is a direct reflection of the incredible people who make up our school family.”

A proud graduate of the Fort Mill School District himself, Dr. Epps has played a pivotal role in shaping the district’s success. His leadership has helped develop an outstanding team of educators and administrators, many of whom have gone on to make significant impacts in other districts. His legacy is evident in the generations of students who have benefited from his commitment to excellence in education.

He also highlighted the district’s ability to balance rapid growth with academic excellence. “I am especially proud of our ability to sustain high levels of student achievement amid rapid expansion and of the community’s commitment to ensuring every child has access to the resources they need to succeed,” he said, pointing to the newly approved Early Childhood Center as an example of that commitment.

Dr. Epps will remain in a support role through December 2025 to assist with the transition for the next superintendent. The Fort Mill School Board will determine the next steps in selecting his successor, with more details to be shared as they become available.

As he prepares to close this chapter of his career, Dr. Epps reflected on the relationships he has built over the years. “Fort Mill is more than just a district—it is my family,” he said. “It is my sincere hope and prayer that the next leader of this district will carry forward this culture of connection, collaboration, and unwavering dedication to our students that is highly unique to Fort Mill.”

Epps expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve and lead the district for so many years. “Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this incredible journey. I will forever be grateful for the years I have spent here and for the lifelong friendships and memories I take with me.”
