South Carolina Introduces License Plates for Autistic and Neurodivergent Drivers

South Carolina is launching a new initiative to support autistic and neurodivergent drivers with a specialized license plate designed to improve interactions with law enforcement and promote awareness.

The new plates, approved by the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles (SCDMV),aim to help first responders quickly recognize when a driver may have autism or other neurodivergent conditions. This initiative is part of the state’s ongoing effort to create safer and more inclusive communities for individuals with developmental differences.

Advocates say the plates will provide an added layer of communication, helping to prevent misunderstandings during routine traffic stops or emergencies. “For autistic drivers, interactions with law enforcement can sometimes be overwhelming or misinterpreted,” said a spokesperson for the South Carolina Autism Society. “This initiative allows officers to approach situations with more awareness and understanding.”

The plates will be available upon request to individuals diagnosed as autistic or neurodivergent. Applicants may need to provide medical documentation to qualify. The state also plans to offer optional training for law enforcement on how to interact effectively and sensitively with neurodivergent individuals.

South Carolina joins a growing number of states taking steps to improve accessibility and safety for neurodivergent drivers. Officials encourage eligible residents to apply through the SCDMV website or their local DMV office.
