Apple’s iOS 18.2 introduces the innovative “Share Item Location” feature, allowing users to securely share the location of AirTags or Find My network accessories with third parties, such as airlines. This feature is now available as part of the public beta for iOS 18.2 and will soon be rolled out globally as a free update for iPhone Xs and later models. Designed to assist in locating misplaced items, this feature is set to revolutionize the baggage tracking process.
Airline Integration and Functionality
In the coming months, over 15 major airlines—including United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, British Airways, Air Canada, and Singapore Airlines—will integrate this feature into their customer service operations. These airlines will accept “Share Item Location” links to aid in locating delayed or mishandled luggage. United Airlines is among the first to adopt this feature, with full systemwide implementation planned by early 2025.
Passengers traveling with United Airlines can now utilize the feature through the airline’s mobile app. When an AirTag is placed in checked baggage, travelers can submit a delayed baggage report via the app, including a “Share Item Location” link. This link enables customer service agents to view the bag’s last known location on an interactive map, expediting the recovery process.
Privacy and Security Measures
Apple has prioritized privacy and security in the design of this feature. Access to shared location links is restricted to authorized airline personnel, who must authenticate through an Apple Account or partner email address. Shared location data is automatically disabled once the passenger is reunited with their luggage, and users can manually stop sharing at any time. Additionally, all links expire after seven days, ensuring that data remains secure.
Implications for Travelers
This integration provides passengers with greater transparency and control over their checked belongings. By enabling direct sharing of AirTag location data with airlines, the process of locating and recovering misplaced luggage becomes more efficient, potentially reducing the time passengers are separated from their belongings.
A New Era in Baggage Tracking
The adoption of Apple’s “Share Item Location” feature marks a significant advancement in baggage tracking technology. By integrating personal tracking devices into airline operations, Apple and its airline partners are setting a new standard for efficiency and customer service in the travel industry. This development promises to enhance the passenger experience and offers a glimpse into the future of smart travel solutions.
