Windows 10 Support Ends in October 2025: Microsoft Offers Extended Security Updates for Transition Period

Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, concluding nearly a decade of updates for the operating system launched in July 2015. After this date, devices running Windows 10 will no longer receive security patches, feature updates, or technical support from Microsoft.

To assist users during the transition to newer systems, the company has introduced the Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, offering critical and important monthly security updates for one year beyond the official end-of-support date.

“We understand that moving to a new PC can take time, and we’re here to support you every step of the way,” Microsoft stated. “The Windows 10 Extended Security Updates (ESU) program is designed to help keep your Windows 10 PC protected after support ends on Oct. 14, 2025.”

ESU Options for Individuals

For the first time, Microsoft is allowing individual users to enroll their personal PCs in the ESU program. Beginning this month, users will begin seeing an enrollment wizard in their Settings menu or via system notifications. The wizard offers three enrollment options:

  • Use Windows Backup to sync settings to the cloud at no cost
  • Redeem 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points
  • Pay $30 USD (pricing may vary by region)

“Once you select an option and follow the on-screen steps, your PC will automatically be enrolled,” Microsoft explained. “ESU coverage for personal devices runs from Oct. 15, 2025, through Oct. 13, 2026.”

The enrollment tool is already available for testers in the Windows Insider Program, with broader availability expected by mid-August 2025.

ESU for Businesses and Virtual Devices

Organizations can subscribe to the ESU program through Microsoft’s Volume Licensing Program at a starting price of $61 per device. Subscriptions may be renewed annually for up to three years, with costs increasing each year.

Devices running in cloud or virtual environments, such as Windows 365 Cloud PCs, will receive security updates at no additional cost.

Microsoft 365 and Defender Support

Microsoft 365 apps will continue to receive security updates on Windows 10 through October 10, 2028, with feature updates lasting through August 2026. Microsoft Defender Antivirus will also receive security intelligence updates through October 2028.

“It’s not meant to be a long-term solution—it doesn’t include new features, non-security updates, design change requests or technical support,” the company clarified.

Transitioning to Windows 11

Microsoft encourages users to determine whether their devices meet Windows 11 requirements using the built-in PC Health Check app. For those upgrading, Windows Backup is recommended as a secure method to transfer data and settings to a new device.
