Nine Killed on South Carolina Roadways July 18–20; York County Among Areas Impacted

COLUMBIA, S.C. (July 21, 2025) — The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) reports that nine people were killed in motor vehicle collisions on state roadways during the weekend of July 18 to July 20. The preliminary data reflects fatal crashes occurring from 6:00 p.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Sunday.

According to the agency, these weekend fatalities contribute to a year-to-date total of 465 traffic deaths statewide as of July 20. This marks a decline from the 569 fatalities recorded during the same period in 2024.

Focus on York County

York County has reported 14 roadway fatalities so far in 2025, slightly down from 16 during the same timeframe last year. The county remains among the areas with the highest number of traffic-related deaths in South Carolina.

While the state is seeing an overall decrease in fatalities, the data underscores the continued need for driver vigilance and enforcement efforts in high-traffic counties like York. Local officials and law enforcement agencies are expected to monitor trends closely as the year progresses.

SCDPS notes that all data is preliminary and subject to change pending confirmation by county coroners. For more information and updates, visit scdps.sc.gov.
