This weekend, the Fort Mill Community Playhouse (FMCP) is set to open its first play of the season with a classic comedy, Neil Simon’s “The Odd Couple.” This beloved play, which has entertained audiences for decades, will be performed on various dates: February 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 16th, 17th, and 18th of 2024.
“The Odd Couple” introduces us to two iconic characters: Oscar Madison, a laidback and untidy sportswriter, and Felix Ungar, a neat, uptight news writer. Both men find themselves separated from their wives and end up living together, struggling to coexist despite their contrasting personalities and lifestyles. The play humorously explores themes of friendship, compatibility, and the challenges of starting over.
The Fort Mill Community Playhouse, a hub of cultural activity, has a rich history that dates back to 1980. It all began when a group from Fort Mill, including Robert Reid, was inspired by a play they saw while vacationing. Recognizing the potential for similar entertainment in Fort Mill, Reid, with the help of Steve McCrae and others, produced the first play, “Spring for Sure,” under a circus tent at the Leroy Springs Recreation Complex. This event, sponsored by Leroy Springs & Co., received overwhelming community support, leading to the formal organization of the FMCP in October 1980 as a non-profit entity.
Over the years, the Playhouse has enchanted audiences with a variety of productions. From “Carnival” in its second year to “The Music Man” at the A. O. Jones School Auditorium, the FMCP has continually adapted and grown. Even after the school auditorium’s destruction in 1985, the Playhouse resiliently returned to its original ‘Big Top’ setting, presenting “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” in 1986.
The Playhouse later found a home in the Fort Mill High School Auditorium with the 1987 production of “The Sound of Music.” It wasn’t until 2001 that the Playhouse had its own venue on Banks Street, courtesy of Leroy Springs & Co. In 2016, due to property development, the Playhouse moved to its current location at 220 Main Street, continuing its tradition of excellent performances.
The purpose of the FMCP has always been to present a wide range of theatrical works, fostering interest in the performing arts within the Fort Mill community. Their commitment is to bring the unique experience of live theatre to their audience, an experience unparalleled by television or movies.
This season’s opening with “The Odd Couple” promises to be a delightful and humorous experience for all. It’s a testament to the enduring charm of Neil Simon’s writing and the Playhouse’s dedication to bringing quality entertainment to Fort Mill. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience this classic comedy brought to life by the talented members of the Fort Mill Community Playhouse.
