Google.org Awards $1M Grant to Train South Carolina Nonprofits in AI

Columbia, SC — Google.org has awarded a $1 million grant to the Central Carolina Community Foundation to provide artificial intelligence (AI) training for nonprofits throughout South Carolina. The funding is part of Google’s national $75 million AI Opportunity Fund, aimed at equipping one million Americans with AI skills.

Through this initiative, the Foundation—alongside national nonprofit Project Evident—will deliver AI-focused training and technical assistance to help local organizations integrate AI tools into their operations. Project Evident will also provide capacity-building support to South Carolina nonprofits, including coaching and technical guidance.

The program will include in-person workshops, webinars, peer learning sessions, one-on-one coaching, and the development of AI adoption roadmaps. A recent “Discovery Day” event in Columbia marked the official launch of the initiative.

The Foundation’s AI Accelerator program will support 20 nonprofits across the state that are committed to implementing AI into their work. These organizations span human services, health, and community and economic development sectors.

Google’s support comes in response to findings that over 40% of nonprofits surveyed lack staff with AI training. By expanding access to digital skill-building, the initiative seeks to empower organizations to improve efficiency, decision-making, and impact in the communities they serve.

To date, Google has trained more than 162,000 individuals in digital skills through partnerships with various nonprofits and educational institutions across the country.
