If you’ve driven through Fort Mill lately, you may have noticed something unusual along Gold Hill Road. Within a few hundred feet of one another sit three gas stations—John’s Place, Murphy USA and QuikTrip—that have quietly created what could be called the “Bermuda Triangle” of cheap gas.
Fortunately, the only thing you’ll lose there is less money at the pump.
For those of us who regularly travel across South Carolina, the difference is striking. While larger cities like Rock Hill, Greenville and Spartanburg typically post gas prices near the state average, even smaller communities such as Chester, Lancaster and Union often charge 30 to 50 cents more per gallon than the trio of stations along Gold Hill Road.
Recently, regular unleaded was selling for $3.19 per gallon at Murphy USA. Just a few miles away outside Tega Cay, a different station was charging $3.75 per gallon for the same fuel. That’s a 56-cent difference—enough to save more than $8 on a 15-gallon fill-up.
The price competition didn’t happen overnight. For years, John’s Place earned a reputation for offering some of the area’s lowest fuel prices. The rivalry intensified when Murphy USA opened nearby several months ago, adding another major competitor to the mix. With QuikTrip also in the immediate area, motorists have become the biggest winners as each station works to remain competitive.
How long will the unusually low prices last? No one knows. Gas prices continue to be one of the most volatile items purchased on a daily basis.
For now, though, Fort Mill drivers can take advantage of lower prices at the pump. In a time when every dollar counts, this small corner of Gold Hill Road has become one of the best places in the region to fill up. If you’re passing through, it may be worth making a quick stop.
You might not find cheaper gas anywhere else in the Carolinas.
