York and Lancaster County voters will decide a dozen South Carolina House contests in the November general election, a fuller slate than the two counties usually see, with Democrats challenging Republican incumbents in nearly every district.
The lone exception is District 49, where Rock Hill Democrat John R. King, the incumbent, drew no Republican opponent and is positioned to keep his seat. Everywhere else across the two counties, the fall ballot pits a sitting Republican against a Democratic challenger, and in one York County district a third party candidate as well.
The seats determine who represents the area in the General Assembly, where lawmakers set the state budget and shape policy on schools, roads, taxes and the rapid growth reshaping both counties. Several matchups were set by contested primaries on June 9, while others advanced candidates who faced no primary opposition.
York County races
In District 26, Rep. David W. Martin, a Republican who won a contested June 9 primary, faces Democrat Jenny Desch and Workers Party candidate Kiral Mace. It is the only local House contest with three candidates on the ballot.
In District 29, which takes in parts of Cherokee, Spartanburg and York Counties, Republican Rep. Dennis C. Moss faces Democrat Marina Franco.
In District 43, which covers parts of Chester and York Counties, Republican Rep. Thomas R. “Randy” Ligon faces Democrat Alex Clark.
In District 46, Republican Rep. Heath Sessions faces Democrat Omar McCrorey.
In District 47, Republican Rep. Thomas E. “Tommy” Pope, the Speaker Pro Tempore of the South Carolina House, faces Democrat Justin Bennett, who won a contested June 9 primary over Peter Martinez.
In District 48, Republican Rep. Brandon Guffey faces Democrat Rustin Terry.
In District 49, Democratic Rep. John R. King of Rock Hill won his June 9 primary over Perry Sutton and faces no Republican opponent in November.
In District 66, Republican Rep. Jackie R. Terribile faces Democrat Heather Hart.
Lancaster County races
In District 44, which lies within Lancaster County, Republican Rep. Mike Neese faces Democrat Katie Crosby. Neese survived the closest local primary on June 9, edging Tripp McCoy by 138 votes.
In District 45, which covers parts of Kershaw and Lancaster Counties, Republican Rep. Brandon Newton faces Democrat Nicole Ventour. Newton won his June 9 primary over Russell Brazell.
In District 53, which takes in parts of Chesterfield, Darlington and Lancaster Counties, Republican Rep. Richie Yow faces Democrat Bruce Wallace. Neither faced a contested primary among the results reported for the area.
In District 65, which spans parts of Chesterfield, Darlington, Kershaw and Lancaster Counties, Republican Rep. Cody T. Mitchell faces Democrat Tanisha Baskin. Mitchell won his June 9 primary over Barbara Arthur by the widest margin of the local House races.
