An investigation is underway after contractors made a disturbing discovery on Oakland Avenue Tuesday morning, uncovering what appears to be a human skull in a local crawl space according to WCCB.
Contractor Phillip Shipp was working with a crew hired to clear out the crawl space of a property in the 300 block of Oakland Avenue when he found the remains hidden behind several old doors stacked against a wall. Shipp indicated that while he initially mistook the object for a plastic Halloween prop, the density and weight of the object quickly made it clear that the skull was real.
Upon recognizing the gravity of the situation, the contracting team immediately notified management and local authorities.
The Rock Hill Police Department arrived quickly to secure the scene. The department’s Criminal Investigations Division has taken the lead on the case. According to authorities, the suspected remains have been sent to a forensic anthropologist for laboratory analysis. Official next steps in the investigation will depend entirely on the upcoming forensic results, which will determine if the remains are indeed human.
Police have stated there is no immediate threat to the public.
