South Carolina forest landowners and farmers can now apply for financial assistance following the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene in September 2024. The South Carolina Department of Agriculture (SCDA) began accepting applications for the SC Disaster Relief Block Grant on May 12.
The program, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, aims to offset losses involving infrastructure, markets, and timber. The South Carolina Forestry Commission (SCFC) is specifically overseeing the timber loss portion of the grant.
To qualify for timber assistance, landowners must meet several criteria:

Property must be located within an eligible county (York and Lancaster counties are both eligible).

The land must have been owned by a private individual as of September 27, 2024.

Forestland must consist of at least 10 contiguous acres with at least 15% significant tree damage.

Eligible damage includes blown-over trees, broken main stems, or major crown destruction.
Landowners are encouraged to hire registered or consulting foresters to determine loss valuations. While funds remain available, the SCFC will pay consultants a set rate to help cover these costs. Alternatively, SCFC foresters can provide estimates based on broad timber attributes, though these are expected to be more conservative.
