When Aluminum Dreams Roll Into York for Silver in the City

The morning sun catches them first. Dozens of polished Airstream trailers, their curved aluminum shells gleaming like a fleet of silver bullets parked along Congress Street, transforming downtown York, South Carolina into something between a time capsule and a traveling dream.

This is Silver in the City, and for one weekend each April, this small York County town becomes the unlikely capital of American road culture.

A Festival Unlike Any Other

Now entering its ninth year, Silver in the City has grown from a modest gathering of Airstream enthusiasts into one of the most distinctive events in the Palmetto State. The annual urban Airstream rally is hosted by members of the Palmetto State Airstream Club and the City of York, population 9,300.

About 70 rigs take over York for the weekend, their owners “boondocking” without hookups, running on their own power and water supplies while becoming temporary residents of this historic downtown.

The 2026 Schedule

The 9th Annual Silver in the City takes place April 16 through 19, 2026.

Thursday, April 16: The festivities begin at York Place, 234 Kings Mountain Street, with a complimentary pizza supper under the pavilion.

Friday, April 17: A coffee and pastry bar opens around 7 AM. At 9 AM sharp, the parade into town begins, with the York Police Department escorting the silver caravan through the streets. Owners are encouraged to fly their flags as they roll through town. The central gathering at Yorkville Marketplace kicks off at 5 PM. Congress Street closes to vehicular traffic from 9 AM Friday through noon Sunday.

Saturday, April 18: The Open House runs from 1 PM to 4 PM, giving the public a chance to tour the trailers while live music fills the downtown air and local shops offer special weekend hours.

Sunday, April 19: A coffee and pastry bar opens at the City Market for one last gathering before the departure begins at noon.

A Community Tradition

The rally has reached full capacity for 2026. Organizers Terry Montgomery and John Leake now maintain a standby list for hopeful participants.

There is no rally fee. Instead, organizers ask participants to consider a donation to the Yorkville Agricultural and Education Society, which is working to preserve the York Place property where Thursday’s gathering takes place.

Everything York has to offer is within easy walking distance: shopping, restaurants, and churches, all surrounded by the town’s beautiful Historic District. The event is free and family friendly for spectators.
