Fort Mill Launches New Traffic Enforcement Program to Guard School Zones

In a move to prioritize the safety of its youngest residents, the Town of Fort Mill and the Fort Mill School District have officially inked a new partnership to tackle the perennial headache of school-day congestion.

Announced on February 24, 2026, the newly minted Traffic Enforcement Officer Program introduces a dedicated team of officers whose sole mission is to manage the flow of vehicles and protect pedestrians during the busiest hours of the school day.

A Specialized Approach to Safety

While many are familiar with School Resource Officers (SROs) who manage campus security, this new program is a different beast entirely. It is laser-focused on the asphalt.

  • Dedicated Personnel: Two sworn officers from the Fort Mill Police Department will be assigned exclusively to traffic duties.

  • Peak Period Focus: Coverage will be concentrated during morning arrival, afternoon dismissal, and major school-wide events.

  • Primary Goals: Reducing roadway congestion, preventing crashes, and ensuring students can cross streets safely.

Collaboration Over Congestion

The program is the result of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that highlights a shared financial and civic commitment. By splitting the costs, the Town and the School District are able to address immediate safety concerns without placing the entire burden on a single entity.

“As Fort Mill continues to evolve, we must remain proactive in addressing traffic challenges around our schools,” said Mayor Guynn Savage. “This program strengthens safety while reinforcing the strong collaboration between the Town, our Police Department, and the School District.”

Letting Teachers Teach

One of the most practical benefits of the program is the relief it provides to school staff. Historically, administrators and teachers have often had to step into traffic roles to keep cars moving.

Superintendent Grey Young emphasized that this partnership allows educators to stay where they are needed most: in the classroom. “This partnership allows us to enhance safety… while ensuring our administrators and teachers remain focused on instruction and student achievement,” Young noted.

Key Takeaways of the Program

Feature Traffic Enforcement Officer Program
Staffing 2 Sworn Fort Mill Police Officers
Primary Focus School zones, crash prevention, and traffic flow
Funding Cost-sharing between Town and School District
Distinction Operates independently from the SRO program

This proactive initiative serves as a bridge while the town continues to explore long-term infrastructure solutions for its growing population. For now, Fort Mill parents can breathe a little easier knowing there are dedicated professionals keeping a watchful eye on the morning commute.
