The South Carolina State Fair opens Thursday in Columbia, bringing carnival rides, games, food and family entertainment alongside expanded efforts to keep visitors safe.
Fair officials are coordinating with multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and the South Carolina Highway Patrol, to help maintain security throughout the event.
The fair attracted approximately 400,000 visitors last year, and organizers hope to increase attendance this year.
Ride safety is another priority. North American Midway Entertainment, which provides rides for the fair, conducts multiple inspections to ensure equipment is secure and operating properly.
Officials are also reminding visitors to follow all posted rules and ride operator instructions, including height requirements and restrictions on movement while rides are operating. Riders should remain seated and keep their hands and feet inside until rides come to a complete stop.
Families attending the fair should also be aware of the event’s youth admission policy. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old.
From Sunday through Thursday, accompanying adults must present a valid driver’s license after 5 p.m. to verify their age. On Fridays and Saturdays, the identification requirement applies throughout the day.
Fair officials encourage parents and guardians to remain with children during their visit.
The annual event combines traditional fair attractions with security and safety measures designed to help families enjoy their time at the fairgrounds.
