A 32-year-old man was hospitalized Wednesday night after a Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle struck him on U.S. 521 near Kershaw, according to the sheriff’s office.
The crash happened at 10:02 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, near the B & J Mini Mart. An on-duty deputy was driving a marked 2025 Ford Explorer south on U.S. 521, also known as Kershaw Camden Highway, toward Kershaw when the vehicle hit the man. The deputy was not responding to a call for service at the time, the sheriff’s office said.
The deputy stopped, called for assistance and gave the man aid until Lancaster County Emergency Medical Services arrived. EMS crews took him to a medical facility. He was alert and responsive after the crash, but his current condition has not been released. The deputy was not hurt, and the patrol car had minor damage.
Highway Patrol leads the investigation
A South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper arrived shortly after the crash and is leading the investigation. Sheriff Barry Faile wished the injured man a full recovery and said his office will share all its information with the Highway Patrol and “will cooperate fully with their investigation.”
Results of the Highway Patrol investigation are expected in several days.
