A young family with a newborn escaped safely after a fire broke out at a townhome on Grantham Place Drive in Fort Mill.
About six agencies responded to the blaze, which firefighters extinguished in approximately 20 minutes.
Special firewalls extending through the roof prevented the fire from spreading to neighboring townhomes. Residents in the two adjacent homes were temporarily displaced but had already evacuated when firefighters arrived.
Neighbors reported that the family lost all of their possessions in the fire. Community members are organizing donations of clothing and other needed items to assist the family.
The fire also prompted a rapid evacuation among nearby residents. One neighbor evacuated with a pet after noticing smoke coming from the burning townhome.
Fire officials said the building’s construction played an important role in limiting the damage. The firewalls extended through the roof and helped prevent flames from spreading to adjoining homes.
Preliminary observations indicate the fire may have originated near the garage, but the fire marshal is continuing to investigate the exact cause.
No injuries were reported.
