South Carolina shoppers will have the opportunity to save on back-to-school purchases during the state’s annual Tax-Free Weekend, scheduled for Aug. 7-9.
During the three-day event, eligible purchases can be made without paying state or local sales tax, whether shopping in stores or online. All South Carolina retailers selling qualifying items are required to participate and may not collect sales tax on eligible purchases.
The tax exemption covers a wide range of back-to-school and household essentials. Eligible items include school supplies used in the classroom or for homework, such as calculators, musical instruments and headphones.
Computers, printers and software also qualify. Computer accessories, including monitors and keyboards, are exempt only when purchased as part of a computer package.
The exemption also applies to clothing and footwear, including athletic uniforms, dance shoes, coats, rainwear and diapers.
In addition, shoppers can save on certain bed and bath items, including sheets, pillows, bedspreads, towels and shower curtains.
There is no price limit on qualifying purchases, and eligible items may be purchased new or used.
