YORK, S.C. — A 72-year-old man faces serious charges, including attempted murder, following an alleged road rage incident that escalated into a shootout on East Alexander Love Highway this past weekend.
The York Police Department arrested Michael Thomas Bean, 72, of York, in connection with the confrontation that occurred around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Bean is currently being held on a $125,000 bond.
According to investigators, the violence stemmed from a dispute between Bean and an 18-year-old male driver. Police say Bean “aggressively maneuvered” his vehicle and entered into a verbal altercation with the teenager. The situation turned dangerous when Bean allegedly retrieved a handgun from his car and opened fire on the victim.
Authorities report that the 18-year-old, who was armed, returned fire in self-defense, striking Bean in the left arm.
The teenager immediately called 911 to report the shooting and remained at the scene. Upon arrival, officers detained the 18-year-old, but following an investigation and his cooperation with authorities, police determined he had acted to protect himself.
Bean was treated for the gunshot wound to his arm before being taken into custody. He has been charged with:
-
Attempted Murder
-
Pointing and Presenting Firearms at a Person
-
Malicious Injury to Personal Property (value less than $2,000)
