LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. — One person is dead and two others have been hospitalized following a single-vehicle collision early Friday morning in Lancaster County, authorities said.
According to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. along U.S. Highway 521 (Charlotte Highway), near the intersection with Northfield Drive.
Troopers reported that a Kia sedan carrying three people was traveling south on Highway 521 when it ran off the left side of the roadway and slammed into a tree.
A passenger in the back seat of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. The driver and a front-seat passenger were injured and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their current conditions have not been released.
The identities of the victims were not immediately available Friday morning.
Highway Patrol troopers are continuing to investigate the accident. It remains unclear what caused the vehicle to veer off the road.
