The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) announced earlier this week that it is seeking public comment on a proposal to add a major coordination project to the state’s long-term plan for highway improvements.
SCDOT is moving to amend the 2024-2033 Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) to formally include the SCDOT/NCDOT I-77 Coordination Project.
This project is specifically focused on collaborating with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the I-77 corridor as it crosses the state border. The goal is to evaluate and advance improvements that enhance mobility and connectivity between South Carolina and North Carolina.
The $3 million estimated cost for this phase covers several key areas:
- Preliminary Engineering: Initial design and feasibility studies.
- Rights-of-Way: Necessary land acquisition for future construction.
- Construction Activities: Work to enhance the corridor’s functionality.
Additionally, as part of this effort, SCDOT will assume management of the existing Exit 90 Improvements from York County to integrate them into the overall interstate corridor plan. The work will address financial, engineering, and legal considerations for seamless interstate operation.
SCDOT is accepting public comments on the addition of this project to the STIP for a 21-day period, beginning November 3, 2025, and concluding on November 23, 2025.
