Lancaster County Schools Superintendent Resigns, Will Leave Post at End of 2025

LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. – Dr. Raashad Fitzpatrick, superintendent of Lancaster County School District, has announced his resignation, effective December 31, 2025. The announcement came during a special board meeting on Wednesday morning. Fitzpatrick, who began his role in January 2024, has accepted a new position with Cherokee County Schools.

The decision, he said, was driven by personal reasons, primarily the desire to be closer to his aging parents in Spartanburg. In addressing the school board, Fitzpatrick explained that recent changes in his parents’ health made it clear that he needed to relocate to support them.

District leaders acknowledged the significance of Fitzpatrick’s departure and emphasized that while it is difficult to see him leave, they support his decision to prioritize family. The school board also confirmed that a search for his successor will begin soon, considering both internal and external candidates.

Fitzpatrick became the district’s first Black superintendent since Lancaster County’s school systems consolidated in 1962. During his nearly two-year tenure, he oversaw several key initiatives, including academic improvements, enhanced safety measures, and leadership restructuring.

In a letter to staff, he expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve and said that the work accomplished across academics, athletics, and the arts has positioned the district for continued success. He noted that despite stepping down, he remains confident in the district’s future and thanked educators and staff for their dedication.

Fitzpatrick’s last day as superintendent will be December 31, 2025. The district plans to begin the leadership transition process immediately, with further updates on the superintendent search expected in the coming months.
