FORT BRAGG, NC – Today, July 8, 2025, marks a significant anniversary in the proud history of the U.S. Army Special Forces: the official approval of their Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) on July 8, 1960. More than just a symbol, this emblem encapsulates a rich lineage stretching back over a century, embodying the core mission and unique heritage of the Green Berets.
At the heart of the DUI are its crossed arrows, a design element with deep roots in American military history. These arrows were first worn by Native American U.S. Army Indian Scouts between 1890 and 1926, recognizing their exceptional tracking and reconnaissance skills. The tradition was revived during World War II by the legendary Canadian-American First Special Service Force (FSSF). This elite commando unit, known as the “Devil’s Brigade,” is the direct lineage unit of today’s Special Forces, making the arrows a powerful link to their daring predecessors.
Adding another layer of historical significance, the DUI also incorporates the distinctive shape and pattern of the V-42 fighting knife. This iconic dagger was a standard-issue weapon for the FSSF, further solidifying the connection between the modern Green Berets and their World War II forebears.
Perhaps the most potent element of the insignia is its motto: “DE OPPRESSO LIBER.” This Latin phrase, meaning “To Free the Oppressed,” serves as a constant reminder of the original and enduring mission of Special Forces: unconventional warfare. It speaks to their role in training, advising, and assisting indigenous forces to resist and overcome oppressive regimes, a mission that remains critical in today’s complex global landscape.
Sixty-five years after its official adoption, the Special Forces DUI continues to be a powerful symbol of identity, honor, and sacrifice. It not only represents the unit’s distinguished history and lineage but also inspires future generations of Green Berets to uphold the values and mission it embodies. As the U.S. Army Special Forces look to the future, their distinctive insignia stands as a testament to their unwavering commitment to freedom and their unique role in defending it.
