South Carolina closed 2024 on a high note, achieving significant milestones in employment, labor force participation, and job growth. According to the S.C. Department of Employment and Workforce (DEW), December saw the largest labor force in the state’s history, a record number of residents employed, and a continued drop in the unemployment rate.
Employment Trends Show Positive Growth
The seasonally adjusted employment figures for December revealed that 2,417,169 South Carolinians were employed, marking an increase of 4,580 over November 2024 and an impressive 21,742 more than December 2023.
The state’s labor force, which includes people currently working and those actively seeking employment, grew to 2,536,654, an increase of 2,583 over the previous month. Year-over-year, the labor force added 66,354 individuals, showcasing a growing population eager to participate in the workforce.
Additionally, the number of unemployed individuals declined to 119,485, reflecting a decrease of 1,997 compared to November. Although this figure represents a significant increase of 44,612 compared to December 2023, it highlights the state’s ability to absorb more workers as the labor force grows.
Unemployment Rate Falls
The state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate dropped from 4.8% in November to 4.7% in December, continuing a positive trend. For comparison, the national unemployment rate also decreased, settling at 4.1%.
DEW Executive Director William Floyd highlighted the importance of these figures, noting that South Carolina’s workforce and job market remain robust. “The state’s labor force saw a historic increase, and a record number of South Carolinians are working,” Floyd said.
Industry-Specific Gains
Several industries experienced month-over-month job growth in December, including Construction, Finance & Insurance, and Private Educational Services. These sectors have played a vital role in supporting South Carolina’s expanding labor market.
“As the state’s population grows, industries are responding with increased hiring,” Floyd said. He emphasized that this trend not only reflects economic resilience but also creates opportunities for job seekers across a variety of fields.
New Year, New Career Initiative
To build on this momentum, DEW has launched its New Year, New Career initiative, designed to help South Carolinians explore new job opportunities and career paths in January and February. Resources include:
- Explore SC@Work Campaign: Offers detailed information and data on various occupations across the state.
- Education and Training Opportunities: Programs provided through the South Carolina Technical College System and other apprenticeship and on-the-job training initiatives.
- SC Works Centers: Provide personalized support for job seekers, including virtual engagement options and on-site services through the SC@Work: Rural Connections team.
- Veteran Support through S.T.A.Y.S. Program: Aimed at helping veterans and their families transition into the workforce.
Encouraging Workforce Development
Floyd encouraged residents to take advantage of these resources. “Our agency is committed to connecting job seekers with employers and providing the tools needed to succeed,” he said.
Job seekers interested in exploring new opportunities are encouraged to visit their local SC Works center or the SC Works Virtual Engagement Center to access services, attend job fairs, and learn more about career pathways.
