Winthrop Men’s Soccer Looks to End Losing Streak Against Longwood

Winthrop men’s soccer returns to Eagle Field on Saturday, Oct. 17, looking to snap a three-game losing streak when it hosts Longwood in a Big South Conference matchup at 4:30 p.m. in Rock Hill.

The Eagles enter the contest with a 5-7-1 overall record and a 2-2 mark in conference play. Longwood is 6-6-1 overall and 1-3 in the Big South.

Winthrop is coming off a 1-0 loss to East Tennessee State on Tuesday. The Eagles previously dropped games against UNC Asheville and nationally ranked UNC Wilmington.

Despite the recent struggles, Winthrop has demonstrated offensive potential, averaging 1.92 goals per game. Longwood averages 2.0 goals per game, making Saturday’s contest a matchup between two of the conference’s productive offenses.

Jorge Perez and Juma Baden lead the Eagles with seven goals each. The pair ranks among the Big South’s top goal scorers, marking the first time since 2015 that two Winthrop players have scored at least seven goals in the same season. Baden also ranks fourth in the conference in points per game.

Winthrop’s most recent victory came in a 4-0 win over Presbyterian College, highlighted by a hat trick from Perez. The Eagles also opened conference play with a 3-1 victory at Radford.

Winthrop leads the all-time series against Longwood 14-3-2. The teams played to a 2-2 draw last season in Farmville, Virginia.

Saturday’s game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live statistics available online.
