Winthrop Women’s Soccer Returns to Action Against Presbyterian

Winthrop women’s soccer returns to the field Wednesday after an 11-day break, hosting Presbyterian College at 6 p.m. at Eagle Field in Rock Hill.

The Eagles enter the matchup with a 3-9-1 overall record and a 0-4 mark in Big South Conference play. Presbyterian also holds a 0-4 conference record, with a 3-7-1 overall mark. Both teams are seeking their first conference victory of the season.

Winthrop is looking to rebound from its recent loss to USC Upstate, in which Amelie Steen scored the Eagles’ only goal on a penalty kick. Freshman goalkeeper Mia Ruffalo recorded seven saves while playing the full 90 minutes. Sophia Balliet and Ashley Ross each recorded two shots to lead Winthrop.

Senior Monssi Avila-Gutierrez leads the Eagles with four goals this season. She was named First Team All-Big South last year after scoring five goals, including two game-winners. Avila-Gutierrez, along with teammates Cordelia McIntosh, Mia Silber and Steen, was named to the Big South Midseason Watch List.

Wednesday’s matchup marks the 20th meeting between the programs. Winthrop leads the all-time series 12-4-3, including a 6-3 record at home. However, the teams have played to 2-2 draws in each of their last two meetings.

Wednesday’s game will be streamed on ESPN+, with live statistics available online.
