Eagles In Field of 68 Opening Day Madness For 2nd Straight Year
Rock Hill, S.C. – Winthrop head coach Mark Prosser announced a 32-game schedule that features 15 home contests, Thursday evening.
For a second straight season the Eagles are part of the Field of 68 Opening Day Marathon as they’ll kickoff the season on Monday, Nov. 2 at 9 a.m. against Queens. The game will be played at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center near downtown Rock Hill, S.C.
Following the Queens game the Eagles will host North Dakota on Saturday, Nov. 7 at noon in their home opener. Winthrop will host Jackson State for “Homecoming” on Saturday, Nov. 14 and will be part of a doubleheader with the women’s team as tipoff is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. The Eagles round out the home schedule with UT Chattanooga (Nov. 18), Clinton College (Nov. 28), Bob Jones (Dec. 8), Toccoa Falls (Dec. 21), and Morris College (Dec. 28).
The game with Queens is the only regular season contest scheduled for a neutral site floor and kicks off a challenging schedule away from home in non-conference action. The first true road game for the Eagles will be at Kennesaw State on Nov. 10. Winthrop has a challenging stretch of four out of five games on the road and then 7-of-9.
The Eagles will play back-to-back road games at Wofford College (Nov. 21) and then at Illinois (Nov. 23). The Eagles return to Champaign, Ill. where they pulled off an 84-80 overtime win over Illinois in 2016. After a home game on Nov. 28 the road trip continues with games in the Palmetto State with trips to South Carolina State (Dec. 2) and Coastal Carolina (Dec. 5).
The stretch of 7-of-9 on the road closes out with three straight away games in a five-day span. It starts at Utah State on Dec. 12 as the Eagles will then travel one state over to take on Wyoming on Dec. 14 and finish the trip at North Texas on Dec. 16.
Big South Conference play begins Jan. 1 as the Eagles host Gardner-Webb. The league home slate also includes Longwood (Jan. 6), Radford (Jan. 13), High Point (Jan. 20), Charleston Southern (Jan. 23), UNC Asheville (Feb. 6), USC Upstate (Feb. 13) and Presbyterian College (Feb. 25).
Two days after the conference opener at home against Gardner-Webb on Jan. 1, the Eagles begin their road portion of the conference schedule at UNC Asheville on Sunday, Jan. 3. The road schedule also includes USC Upstate (Jan. 9), Presbyterian College (Jan. 16), Radford (Jan. 30), Longwood (Feb. 3), Charleston Southern (Feb. 11), High Point (Feb. 18), and Gardner-Webb (Feb. 20).
There will be three possible ESPNU Wild Card matchups for the Eagles with the first on Feb. 11 at Charleston Southern followed by Feb. 20 at High Point and Feb. 25 at home against Presbyterian College.
For a third straight year the Big South Conference Tournament will take place Mar. 3-7 in Johnson City, Tenn. At Freedom Hall Civic Center.
