The town will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks with a bell ringing, a reading of first responders’ names and a display of 412 flags at Town Hall.

The Town of Fort Mill will hold a 9/11 remembrance ceremony Friday, Sept. 11, marking 25 years since the terrorist attacks, according to the town.
At 8:46 a.m., participating downtown churches will join in a Ringing of the Bells, marking the moment American Airlines Flight 11 struck the World Trade Center’s North Tower, the town said. A commemorative ceremony will follow immediately in front of Fort Mill Town Hall, including a brief timeline of the day’s events, a ceremonial reading of the names of the 412 first responders who died, and a moment of silence, according to the town. The ceremony will also recognize Fort Mill Police Officer Mele, who was involved in 9/11 and lost friends and coworkers, the town said.
The event will be livestreamed on the Town of Fort Mill’s Facebook page and its YouTube channel, @fortmilltv, for residents who can’t attend in person.
A memorial display will be set up on the North White Street side of Town Hall, featuring a Fort Mill Police Department patrol vehicle with a memorial wreath and a Fort Mill Fire Department tent displaying turnout gear with a memorial wreath, according to the town. The Town Hall lawn will also feature 412 American flags representing the first responders who died on Sept. 11, 2001, and the fire department plans to hang a large American flag from a fire engine across Tom Hall Street in front of Fire Station 1, continuing a tradition from past commemorations, the town said.
The town is partnering with the Boy Scouts of America Palmetto Council, which will host its 2026 Flags for Heroes display in Fort Mill, according to the town. Fort Mill American Legion Post 43 and its Auxiliary will help place the 412 flags at Town Hall and take part in the reading of names.
The town is also collecting thank-you cards and letters of appreciation for local first responders to be distributed at the American Legion’s 9/11 First Responder Appreciation Lunch, which is free for first responders and open to the public for $5, according to the town. Residents can drop off letters and cards before Sept. 11 at Fort Mill Town Hall, 205 N. White Street, in the main entrance lobby off McCammon Street, where a marked bin will be available, the town said.
