York County Coroner Identifies Man Who Died at York County Detention Center

A Rock Hill man died early Sunday morning after he was found unconscious at the York County Detention Center, according to the York County Coroner’s Office.

The death is now under investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and the Coroner’s Office, raising questions for the community about what happened inside the county jail and how the case will be reviewed.

SLED Investigates In Custody Death At York County Detention Center

The York County Coroner’s Office responded to Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill on Sunday morning, June 21, to investigate the in custody death. The decedent has been identified as Kenneth Hines, born April 23, 1986, of Rock Hill.

According to the Coroner’s Office, Hines was found unconscious and not breathing at the detention center. He was transported to the emergency room, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Autopsy and toxicology results are expected to be completed this week, with results still pending as of the release. SLED and the Coroner’s Office said they will continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Hines’ death.
