An Indian Land, South Carolina man faces a federal hate crime charge for allegedly defacing a Jewish community complex in Charlotte.
Dalton Ray Mullis, 24, was arrested by federal authorities following a joint investigation. According to a criminal complaint filed in the Western District of North Carolina, Mullis targeted the Foundation of Shalom Park complex on the evening of January 19, 2026. The property houses multiple Jewish religious, cultural, and educational organizations, including the Charlotte Jewish Day School and a Holocaust Memorial.
Affidavits allege that Mullis defaced several buildings on the property by affixing flyers containing threatening, antisemitic imagery, including a noose, a swastika, and a Nazi SS symbol. Surveillance footage from the complex reportedly captured Mullis spraying an adhesive onto a school entrance before placing a flyer on the door. Investigators also allege that Mullis maintained multiple social media accounts where he posted antisemitic messages and imagery between January and April 2026.
The case was investigated by the FBI Charlotte Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, with assistance from South Carolina and local law enforcement agencies. Mullis appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge David C. Keesler and remains in federal custody.
If convicted, Mullis faces a statutory maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
