Fort Mill Boys, Nation Ford Girls Capture Region 3 5A Track and Field Titles

ROCK HILL, SC — The Fort Mill boys and Nation Ford girls claimed team championships at the SCHSL Class 5A Region 3 Track and Field Championships held Thursday, April 30 at Winthrop University, with strong individual performances throughout the meet from athletes representing all seven competing schools.

The Fort Mill boys built a commanding lead with 178 points, comfortably ahead of runner up Northwestern (134) and third place Rock Hill (93). Catawba Ridge (85), Clover (76), Indian Land (73) and Nation Ford (53) rounded out the boys standings.

On the girls side, Nation Ford edged Fort Mill 137 to 126 for the team title, with Northwestern close behind at 121 points. Clover finished fourth (113), followed by Catawba Ridge (83), Indian Land (64) and Rock Hill (47).

Boys Individual Highlights

Northwestern junior Xavier Means won the 100 meter dash in 10.77 seconds, holding off Nation Ford sophomore Logan Thames (10.94) and Rock Hill sophomore Devan Erby (10.95) in a tightly contested final.

Erby returned to claim the 200 meter title in 21.24, with Fort Mill senior Jahzir Mccants taking second in 21.69 and Northwestern senior Je’Corian Hall third in 21.93.

Indian Land senior Tavian Daniels captured the 400 meter dash in 48.17, leading a competitive field that included Thames (48.79) and Mccants (48.88).

In the distance events, Fort Mill swept the top spots in the boys 800. Sophomore Quinlan O’Toole won in 1:58.84, narrowly ahead of Catawba Ridge sophomore William Kowalski (1:58.96), with Fort Mill senior Connor Demmerle third in 2:00.57.

Fort Mill swept the podium in both the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, taking the top three places in each event. Sophomore Owen Ware won the 1600 in 4:19.08, followed by junior Hudson Haley (4:21.93) and senior Connor Demmerle (4:25.66). Ware also captured the 3200 in 9:36.27, with Haley second (9:38.96) and senior Finn Leckrone third (9:40.90).

Northwestern junior Andrew Morton swept the hurdles, taking the 110 meter event in 14.91 and the 400 meter hurdles in 55.96. Teammates Payton Vining (15.61) and Zion Brown (59.76) added second and third place finishes in the respective hurdle events.

Northwestern won the boys 4×100 relay in 41.07, while Indian Land took the 4×400 in 3:19.78 and Fort Mill captured the 4×800 in 8:12.05.

In the field events, Northwestern junior Xavier Wright Meeks dominated the horizontal jumps, winning the long jump at 7.04 meters and the triple jump at 13.83 meters. Northwestern junior Malik Ratliff cleared 1.95 meters to win the high jump.

Rock Hill senior Aidan Graham produced two of the meet’s most impressive throws, winning the discus at 55.18 meters and the shot put at 18.75 meters. Clover senior Jay’Twon Croom won the javelin with a throw of 43.01 meters.

Fort Mill sophomore Jack Allen won the pole vault at 3.50 meters, with teammate Padyn Gossett McDowell and Rock Hill senior Hayden Varnadore tying for second at the same height.

Girls Individual Highlights

Fort Mill senior Mia Williams turned in one of the most productive individual performances of the meet, winning four events. She took the 100 meter dash (12.05), the 200 meter dash (24.84), the long jump (5.62 meters) and the triple jump (11.45 meters).

Nation Ford junior Brianna Watkins finished second in both sprints, running 12.39 in the 100 and 25.18 in the 200.

Clover sophomore Eliza Grieves won the 400 meter dash in 58.66, with Northwestern freshman Kylie Gilmore second (59.64) and Clover sophomore Mya Tobe third (59.65).

Rock Hill junior Jaylen Ramirez claimed the 800 meter run in 2:22.06, ahead of Nation Ford junior Haley Garcia (2:23.93) and Clover senior Ava Jagielski (2:24.62).

Clover senior Ella Nighbor swept the longer distance events, winning the 1600 in 4:55.60 and the 3200 in 10:49.64. Jagielski added a runner up finish in the 1600 (5:07.94).

Indian Land sophomore Caitlin Lindo swept the girls hurdles, winning the 100 meter hurdles in 15.02 and the 400 meter hurdles in 1:05.00.

Nation Ford won the girls 4×100 relay in 48.30, edging Northwestern (48.60). Indian Land captured the 4×400 in 4:00.23, and Fort Mill won the 4×800 in 9:43.40.

In the field events, Nation Ford sophomore Katelyn McFadden and Clover freshman Trinity Hall tied for the high jump title at 1.60 meters. Rock Hill sophomore Darcy York and Clover senior Emily Lantos tied atop the pole vault standings at 2.90 meters.

Indian Land sophomore Alivia Johnson won the discus at 33.35 meters. Northwestern junior Irie Morton claimed the javelin at 34.24 meters, and Clover senior Amaiya Mayfield took the shot put with a throw of 10.80 meters.

Looking Ahead

Teams will enter the postseason at the SCHSL Class 5A state qualifiers and championship meets in the coming weeks.
