Residents near Highway 161 in York may notice an unusual smell this week, but officials say there is no cause for alarm.
The York County Office of Emergency Management announced that a company located at 2470 Old York Road is adding an odorant into their trucks this week, which is producing a strong “rotten egg” odor in the surrounding area.
The smell may linger as the process continues throughout the week, according to the announcement.
Odorants are commonly added to otherwise odorless gases such as propane and natural gas as a safety measure, allowing leaks to be detected quickly by smell. The process of loading or transferring these chemicals can temporarily produce a noticeable sulfur like odor in nearby areas.
Officials did not specify how long the activity is expected to last but indicated the smell should subside once the work is completed.
Residents with concerns are encouraged to contact the York County Office of Emergency Management.
