In light of recent events, including the chemical leaks at Silfab Solar, York County and Fort Mill School District are issuing a joint reminder regarding emergency communications and public notification.
York County and Fort Mill School District operate as partners in protecting the health, safety, and well-being of our community. York County’s public safety agencies—including emergency management, fire, EMS, and law enforcement—work in close coordination with
Fort Mill School District leadership to ensure that schools receive timely information and guidance during emergency situations. This partnership allows both organizations to make informed decisions that prioritize the safety of students, staff, and residents.
Recently, there have been instances where individuals with knowledge of actual or potential hazardous situations have not contacted
public safety authorities immediately, which can create significant challenges for emergency response operations.
When emergency information is shared through unofficial channels before first responders are notified, it can delay response times, spread incomplete or inaccurate information, and divert critical resources away from managing the situation. Only emergency dispatchers are equipped to initiate emergency response operations. The fastest and safest way to protect our schools and community is to notify emergency responders immediately.
For this reason, York County and Fort Mill School District strongly urge residents and visitors to use the proper emergency reporting channels.
If an emergency is occurring, call 9-1-1 immediately.
If you are unsure whether a situation constitutes an emergency or have information related to a potential emergency, you should still call 9-1-1 or contact the York County non-emergency line at (803) 329-0911.
Prompt reporting through these channels ensures that trained dispatchers can rapidly alert first responders, assess the situation, and coordinate the appropriate response. Once public safety officials have verified information, York County and Fort Mill School District will communicate with the public and school community through official channels.
By working together and reporting emergencies through the proper systems, we can ensure the fastest response and the highest level of safety for our community and our schools.
