America’s Boating Club to Offer Safety Certification Courses in Tega Cay

TEGA CAY, SC — As residents begin eyeing the 2026 lake season, America’s Boating Club of the Catawba (also known as the US Power Squadron) has announced its upcoming schedule for the “America’s Boating Course.”

The classroom-based sessions will be held at the Tega Cay Police Department training room on three separate dates: March 31, May 16, and August 22. While the courses are held at the police station, they are organized and taught by the volunteer instructors of America’s Boating Club, a non-profit educational organization that has been teaching boating safety for over 60 years.

Legal Requirements for 2026

The course is designed to help local boaters comply with state laws in both Carolinas. Upon passing the exam at the end of the day, students receive a Boating Certificate recognized by both North and South Carolina.

  • South Carolina Law: Boaters born on or after July 1, 2007, are required by law to pass an approved course to operate any vessel (including Jet Skis) powered by a 10-hp motor or greater.

  • North Carolina Law: Any person born on or after January 1, 1988, must complete an approved course before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more.
