Putting Classrooms Over Bureaucracy: An Essential Educators Voice for Clover School District
My name is Vicki Gibson, and I am a candidate for the At-Large seat on the Clover School District Board of Trustees. Education is not just a career for me; it is my life’s work.
For 42 years, I have had the honor of serving as a classroom teacher, spending decades teaching science and witnessing firsthand the incredible potential of our students.
My ties to this community run deep, and Clover Schools have been the foundation of my family’s story. Both of my sons are proud graduates of Clover High School. My husband dedicated his career to this district as well, serving as a state champion football, softball, and soccer coach. I am incredibly proud of his legacy as a member of the Clover Athletic Hall of Fame, as a coach of that state championship team. From the classroom to the athletic fields, our family has been wholly invested in the success and well-being of Clover’s students.
I am seeking a seat on the board because I believe it is time to put “Classrooms Over Bureaucracy.” In recent years, there has been a growing disconnect between administrative decisions and the daily reality of teaching and learning. The people closest to the work, our educators, must have a prominent voice in the decisions being made.
I am running to ensure that a genuine, veteran educator has a seat at the table. A school board shouldn’t rely solely on political talking points or top-down directives. It needs the grounded, practical perspective of someone who knows what it takes to manage a modern classroom, engage students, and support fellow teachers.
Clover, Bethany and Lake Wylie are experiencing unprecedented hyper-growth. While we can be proud of the recent completion of three new school buildings, managing this expansion correctly is our most pressing challenge. We cannot allow the focus on new facilities to overshadow the day-to-day needs of our existing classrooms.
Currently, our district faces serious resource allocation issues. It is unacceptable that in a well-funded district, our teachers are being forced to ration copy paper, lose access to basic office equipment, and pay out-of-pocket for essential educational apps. A beautiful new building means very little if the teachers inside are not provided with the fundamental tools they need to do their jobs. We must audit our spending to ensure that funding reaches the students first.
Furthermore, with Superintendent Dr. Sheila Quinn recently announcing her retirement, the next board will be tasked with finding our district’s next executive leader. This superintendent search will dictate the trajectory of Clover schools for the next decade. We cannot afford a closed-door, “good ol’ boy” appointment process. We need a rigorous, transparent search that prioritizes educational excellence and community input above all else.
If elected, my priority will be empowering our teachers to step outside of rigid, cookie-cutter instructional mandates. In my 42 years of teaching science, I learned there is a massive difference between “hands-on” and “minds-on” learning. When classrooms are tied to strict checklists, students end up just holding the cup while the adult does the thinking. By trusting our educators with professional freedom, we can transform basic lessons into real problem-solving, preparing our kids to analyze data, create solutions, and thrive in future job markets.
I will work tirelessly to protect teacher retention, knowing that the quality of a child’s education is directly tied to the quality and morale of their teacher. I will also champion absolute transparency, ensuring that parents are never left in the dark about grading policies, curriculum changes, or district spending.
