Peggy Joyce Belk, 94, Lancaster, SC

Peggy Joyce Belk was born Sept. 11, 1931, in Lancaster, a daughter of Manly Belk and Mable Threat Belk. Ms. Belk was a lifelong and dedicated member of the United Methodist Church, recently attending Tabernacle UMC. A woman of deep faith, she served the church in numerous capacities over the years, including as United Methodist Youth Fellowship counselor, Sunday school teacher, church council member, member of the United Methodist Women.

She graduated from Buford High School and initially worked for the Department of Agriculture before working for Springs Industries, leading their Accounts Receivable Department for many years.

Peggy lived a full and happy life, traveling widely with her sister and close friends on trips across the country and enjoying many hobbies. She was a lover of the outdoors, an avid gardener, a fantastic baker, bird watcher, enthusiastic piano player, skilled knitter and crocheter, and loving owner of many cherished pets throughout her life. In her retirement she spent many years volunteering and supporting many local charities, schools, and church organizations. She volunteered with the Epworth Children’s home, served as a board member of the Council on Aging, spent almost 30 years delivering Meals on Wheels.

A surrogate mother and grandmother to her nieces, nephews and many cousins, she loved spending time with her family baking cookies, fishing in the pond, attending concerts, riding bikes, playing card games and Chinese checkers, hiking along creeks, and creating many games and activities for family members to enjoy.

She led her life with true Christian love, generosity, and grace. She was woman of strong principles and convictions and those who knew her and loved her cherished her often irreverent humor and forthright nature.

Ms. Belk is survived by her niece, Pamela Belk Rogers of Lancaster; a great nephew, Jordan Rogers of Raleigh; a nephew, Paul Hayes Belk of Lancaster; great-nephews, Bryce Belk and Lawson Belk of Lancaster; and cousins, Barbara (Avery) Dickson of Cheraw, Emerson (Dottie) Couch and Robert (Donna) Couch of Lancaster.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Paul Manly Belk, sister Madeline Belk, and a great-nephew, Devitt Rogers Jr.

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 11am Monday June 15th at Tabernacle United Methodist Church with a family graveside service at Hopewell Methodist afterwards.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Tabernacle UMC, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, or the Epworth Children’s Home.
