Tega Cay residents Brian and Heather Hyer have opened a full service flooring company that serves homes and businesses across northern York County and south Charlotte, with an office in Tega Cay and a mobile showroom that brings flooring samples directly to the customer.
The couple operates HNB Hyer Flooring, named for Heather and Brian, as the local owners of a Floor Coverings International franchise that carries the South Charlotte name. They bought the business in February, held a soft opening in April, and are now fully operational. Their office sits in the BW Thomas building in Tega Cay, at 150 BW Thomas Drive, Suite 116, where they keep their sample inventory.
For a town that has seen rapid residential growth, the arrival of a locally owned flooring company gives homeowners and commercial tenants a nearby option that handles a project from the first design conversation through the finished installation. The Hyers say using the same installers on every job, so one consistent team carries a project from start to finish, is central to how they operate.
What they offer
The company covers the full range of flooring, including carpet, hardwood, laminate, tile, cork and rubber. Luxury vinyl plank, often called LVP, is the biggest seller. Heather Hyer, who spent the last couple of years in tile design, also handles bathroom remodels and backsplashes, and the company offers sanding and refinishing of existing hardwood floors.
Brian Hyer said the company relies on the same group of installers rather than rotating through unfamiliar crews, so the people who finish a job are the people the Hyers know and trust. By using the same installers, he said, they build a team that carries a project from beginning to end. If a problem comes up, it comes back to the owners directly.
“We are your neighbors,” Heather Hyer said. “We are not happy until you are happy, and we are going to make it right.”
Much of the business runs through a mobile showroom. Instead of asking customers to visit a big box store, the Hyers bring samples to the home in a van that carries roughly 3,000 product options, allowing homeowners to view materials in their own lighting and space. Through the franchise, the company also has supplier relationships with manufacturers such as Shaw, Mohawk and Armstrong, so products not on the van can be ordered.
Residential and commercial work
While much of the work is residential, the Hyers also take on commercial projects. Recent commercial jobs include flooring for a label company print room off Westinghouse Boulevard, a construction office, and the employee restrooms and cove base for an incoming Champs Sports store at Charlotte Premium Outlets.
The company offers several programs aimed at homeowners. One is an accidental damage protection option, priced at 10 percent of a project’s value, that covers certain mishaps for five years after installation. Another is a no interest option for homeowners preparing to sell, which lets sellers update their flooring before listing and repay the cost at closing without affecting their credit. The company also offers 12 months of no interest financing for larger projects.
Local roots
Both owners came to the business through long and varied careers. Brian Hyer retired after 26 years in the U.S. Army and has lived in the area for about four years, taking on handyman work and a series of side jobs before turning to flooring full time. He said the couple’s combined experience made going into business for themselves a natural next step, and he points to that range of service as what sets the company apart.
“What makes us different is we can work with a customer from the idea standpoint all the way through to the completed installation,” he said.
Heather Hyer brings a customer service and design background. She spent years in the restaurant industry, worked in customer service and architectural design for a national homebuilder in Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, and earned an interior design degree from Onondaga Community College using her GI Bill benefits. After moving to the area, she spent nearly two years at a Charlotte tile company before the couple launched their own venture.
“We are like a big box, but in your backyard,” Heather Hyer said.
