A tragic sequence of events unfolded in Lancaster County as a 44-year-old woman, identified as Christina McVay, died on Thursday following a shooting incident that also claimed the life of her six-year-old son earlier this week.
The incident occurred on Sunday, March 9, when deputies responded to a 911 call from a man stating he had shot a woman and child at a residence on Mosteller Drive. Upon arrival, deputies encountered the armed suspect, Jacob Sobieraj, 24, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which Sobieraj was killed. Inside the home, authorities found McVay and her son with gunshot wounds; both were transported to a medical facility for treatment.
The six-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries on Monday, March 10. McVay remained hospitalized in critical condition until her passing on Thursday, March 13.
The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has stated that there is no ongoing threat to the community, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is conducting an independent investigation into the incident.
