LANCASTER COUNTY, S.C. – A 6-year-old boy who was critically injured in a shooting at a home in Lancaster County died on Monday, according to the county coroner’s office.
The incident occurred on Sunday, March 9, when authorities were called to a residence on Mosteller Drive for reports of multiple gunshot victims. Upon arrival, deputies found a 44-year-old woman and a 6-year-old boy suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
According to officials, the boy succumbed to his injuries on Monday, March 10. The woman remains hospitalized, though her current condition has not been disclosed. The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
Suspect Identified
Law enforcement identified the suspect as 24-year-old Jacob Sobieraj. Authorities reported that Sobieraj contacted them around 12:30 p.m. on March 9, claiming responsibility for the shooting and stating that he had killed the woman and child.
When deputies arrived at the scene, Sobieraj was found outside the home armed with a firearm. A shootout ensued between him and law enforcement officers. Sobieraj was fatally shot, and officials believe he was killed by deputies. No officers were injured in the exchange of gunfire.
Inside the home, deputies discovered the wounded woman and child. Both were rushed to the hospital, but the young boy later died from his injuries. The relationship between Sobieraj and the victims remains unclear.
Investigation Ongoing
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) has taken over the investigation, as is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. Further details regarding the motive behind the incident and the connection between those involved have not yet been released.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
